From Iberia to Italy
Chapel Street Ensemble
Sunday 22nd March, 3pm
Turina piano quartet, Manuel de Falla ‘Popular Dances’
Puccini ‘Crisantemi’, Verdi string quartet in E minor
Join us as we travel from Spain to Italy. Chapel Street Ensemble will perform JoaquÃn Turina’s Piano Quartet in A minor, a work that blends rich romantic harmony with the colours and rhythms of Spanish folk music. Written in Paris, it
reflects both Turina’s Andalusian roots and the influence of French impressionism. It was Turina’s friend and compatriot, Manuel de Falla, who encouraged him to incorporate traditional Spanish music into his work. The Ensemble plays de Falla’s Popular Dances, again heavily influenced by his Andalucian heritage.
Verdi’s string quartet is his only surviving chamber work and was written in
Naples during a delay in rehearsals for Aida, caused by the sudden illness of the soprano. Puccini’s Crisantemi is a deeply expressive work, written in a single night in memory of a close friend. The title refers to chrysanthemums, flowers associated with mourning in Italy.
