Rachmaninov ‘Trio elegiaque’, Shostakóvich piano trio no 1
Tchaikovsky string quartet no 1 in D major
In our last concert of this Spring series, Chapel Street Ensemble perform the music of three great Russian composers. Tchaikovsky’s First String Quartet in D major has an incredibly beautiful and haunting melody, based on a folk song Tchaikovsky heard whistled by a house painter while staying at his sister’s family home in the Ukraine. Rachmaninov was highly influenced by Tchaikovsky and his Trio elegiaque was written in memory of his mentor. Shostakóvich’s piano trio was written when he was only 16 years old and was dedicated to Tatyana Glivenko, a young woman Shostakovich fell in love with while recovering from tuberculosis that summer.
